The Warning Signs, Before the Backup
A blockage rarely happens all at once. It builds up inside the pipe and narrows it, so the drain gives you several warnings before it closes completely. Acting on those warnings means a simple clear instead of an overflow and a mess. These are the signs to watch for, roughly in the order they tend to appear.

Slow draining and gurgling
The first sign is usually water draining more slowly than normal, as the narrowing pipe struggles to pass it. Gurgling often comes with it, the sound of air forced back through the water in a trap because a partial blockage is disturbing the flow. Both mean a blockage is building but has not closed the pipe yet, which is the cheapest time to clear it. Gurgling has its own specific causes, which we explain in what causes gurgling drains.
Smells and raised water levels
A build-up of waste in the pipe starts to smell before it fully blocks, so a drain or bathroom smell that keeps coming back is a warning. Water rising in a toilet or shower tray, or taking a long time to go down, is a later sign that the blockage is well advanced and a backup is near.

More than one fixture affected
If several fixtures drain slowly or gurgle at once, or a toilet bubbles when the washing machine or sink drains, the blockage is likely in a shared or main line rather than one fixture. That is more serious, because a blocked main line can back sewage into the property, and it is worth acting on quickly.
What to do when you notice the signs
At the early stage, a plunger or cleaning the trap may clear a single slow fixture. If the signs return, affect more than one fixture, or come with a smell, the cause is deeper, grease, scale, roots or a fault, and a professional clear with a camera check finds and fixes it before it backs up.
