Preparing Drains for Dubai's Rain
For most of the year Dubai is dry, so storm and surface drains quietly collect sand, dust and debris and are easy to forget. Then a heavy rain arrives, and the drains that should carry the water away are half-blocked and cannot cope, so car parks, yards and streets flood. A short checklist before the rain season keeps the water moving when it matters. Here is what to cover.

Clear gullies and surface drains
Outdoor gullies, yard channels and surface drains collect a year of sand and dust, which settles and restricts them. Clearing them before the rain season means they can actually carry a downpour away rather than overflowing. This is the single most useful step, because surface drainage is what handles rain, and it is the most likely to be silted up.
Check soakaways and outdoor drainage
Villas that disperse water through a soakaway should check it is draining before the rain, because a soakaway already silted from irrigation will not take a sudden volume of rainwater and the garden will flood. Clearing the soakaway and its feed pipes beforehand keeps it working when the rain comes.

Clear roof, balcony and podium drains
Roof outlets, balcony drains and podium gullies collect dust and debris and block, so rainwater pools on the surface instead of draining, which can lead to leaks and overflow. Clearing these before the season means water runs off as designed rather than sitting where it can cause damage.
Prepare before the rain, not during
The time to clear storm drainage is before the rain, not when it is already flooding, because a silted drain cannot be cleared usefully mid-downpour and the damage is already happening. A check and clear of the outdoor drainage ahead of the season is cheap insurance against a flood that is expensive and disruptive to deal with.
